Home to the first American settlers, the eastern region of Virginia is rooted deeply in our nation's history—and even more so in Virginia's wine history. Wine making has been a part of Virginia culture as early as 1607 when members of the Jamestown settlement attempted to recreate the wines they were privy to in England. No other territory in the Commonwealth can compare to the varied environment of the eastern region. It stretches from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, through Hampton Roads and up to the Northern Neck and traverses the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. The region's sandy beaches and gentle Atlantic breezes offer a set of unique challenges for the dozen wineries located here. |
